Hannah Jane Boissonneault is a composer-performer currently based in East Lansing, Michigan. Incorporating her experiences in writing and performing progressive metal, indie, folk, and jazz, she seeks to interconnect various musical communities through her compositions.
Hannah has been commissioned by the Detroit Composers' Project, the Steven R. Gerber Trust as a part of the Fresh Inc. Festival, and instrumentalists such as violist Alexis Berry and violinist Amanda Beaune. Recent projects include the commercial release of Feels Like Honey, an intersectional project blurring the lines between classical and contemporary folk music anticipated January 3, 2020; and A Separation of Stream of Consciousness commissioned by cellist Joshua Devries as a part of the YInMn project. She is an alumni of the 2019 Atlantic Music Festival (Waterville, MN) and the 2019 Fresh Inc. Festival (Kenosha, WI). Hannah has participated in reading sessions with members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and upcoming with Roomful of Teeth in January of 2020.
In the Spring of 2019, Hannah composed the score for filmmaker Tennyson Hendershott’s newest short film, It Came From the Woods, and was awarded Best Composition/Original Score at the Bowling Green State University Film & Media Festival. Her piece On Searching for a Voice for violin, cello, and piano, was awarded First Place in the 2019 National Federation of Music Clubs Beyer Composition Awards.
With a passion for the contemporary rock industry, Hannah is endorsed as an artist with Balaguer Guitars. She is the lead vocalist and bassist of progressive alternative band Blank Slate. Since 2016, they have performed alongside numerous acts in the progressive community, including Silent Planet, Hail the Sun, Sianvar, and Strawberry Girls. In 2019, they have released three singles, “Figures” and “Dedicate,” and “Verified.” Their first music video, “Figures,” explores the lines between indie and post-rock with a lyrical spin. The band released their first two EPs, “Animate” and “I Have Considered the Following,” in 2017.
Hannah is completing her B.M. in Composition at Michigan State University, where her primary mentors are David Biedenbender and Zhou Tian. She is also studying jazz bass with Rodney Whitaker.
